Why do LED lights need a driver?

LEDs are economical, long-lasting and extremely compact – which is why they have long since become the standard in modern lighting. They consist of tiny semiconductor light sources and require very little energy to produce bright light.

However, precisely because their power consumption is so low, LEDs cannot be connected directly to standard household power sources such as a 230-volt socket. They require a specially adapted current or voltage supply – which is exactly where LED drivers come into play.

An LED driver ensures that the LED is reliably supplied with the appropriate electrical power – whether through constant current or constant voltage, depending on the LED type. It protects the LED from overload, prevents flickering and ensures long, stable operation. Some LED drivers also allow the LED lights to be dimmed in addition to simply being switched on and off.

What types of LED drivers are there?

LED drivers are generally divided into two types:

Constant-current drivers

Constant-voltage drivers
